Ok, so the name Super Mario Advance 4 is a tiny bit confusing as this is actually Super Mario Bros 3, but it is the fourth game in the Super Mario Advance series. I love the Mario Advance series, but it is kind of weird the way Nintendo released them in a strange order. Still, that takes nothing away from the fact this is a truly incredible game… one of the greatest of all time in fact.

Super Mario Bros 3

At this point what more is there to say about Super Mario Bros 3? This is one of the greatest games of all time and for me personally, it would be in my own top ten of all time. I freaking love this game. This version here is not actually based on the NES original, it is actually based on the SNES version which was released as part of Super Mario All-Stars.

The benefits of this are the much improved 16-bit graphics which look fantastic on the Game Boy Advance. The game has had a few “touch-ups” the most notable one is that Nintendo has added in voices for Mario & Luigi which may not sound like a big deal, but it certainly adds a great deal of personality to the game.

The Koopa Kids!

As Super Mario Advance 4 is Super Mario Bros 3, you have to deal with not just Bowser, but the Koopalings as well. This is an aspect of the game that I really do enjoy. Having a different Koopaling to fight at the end of each of the worlds is a lot of fun and as a kid, I loved the Super Mario Bros 3 TV show so that just adds to the awesomeness. I really like how there is a bit more story to this game.

Power-Ups Galore

One of the things that Super Mario Bros 3 is most well known for is the power-ups. I love Super Mario World, but that game greatly scaled back the power-ups. Super Mario Advance 4 has all the power-ups from Mario 3 and that makes starting each level a lot of fun. You never know if you are going to get the Tanooki Suit, the Frog Suit, the Shoe or something else. These power-ups really do add a lot of fun to the game as well as personality.

What About Extras?

Mario

Super Mario Advance Series

Like other games in the Mario Advance series, Super Mario Advance 4 does have some extras as well. One of these is the original Mario Bros game which as classic as it is, I cannot give the game credit for. The reason for this is that the original Mario Bros has been featured in every Mario Advance game!

The big new feature of Super Mario Advance 4 is the E-Reader Support. This added in a bunch of fun new features that you could put into the game. It was a way of doing DLC before DLC was a thing. As awesome and unique this is, E-Readers and especially the cards are rather hard to come across these days.

I love Super Mario Advance 4. Super Mario Bros 3 is an all time classic and this is one of the best versions that has ever been released. Mario Bros 3 is a game that needs to be in every collection and you really cannot go wrong with this one right here.
